SPF. Every. Single. Day. While ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are the main cause of sunburn and are the strongest in the summer, ultraviolet A (UVA) rays remain constant throughout the year. UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Although less intense than UVB rays, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent and penetrate through glass, making sun protection necessary indoors and driving. The sun does provide us with vitals amounts of Vitamin D and living in a tropical climate like Miami will naturally differ from sun exposure in a more seasonally based climate as Chicago. However, still not a reason to sun bathe and is always recommend to get any pure dose of sunlight sans SPF before 10am and after 3 pm to avoid the sun's strongest rays.
Seek SPF from mineral based Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide based products for the best broad spectrum protection available. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide protect from both UVA and UVB rays by bouncing harmful rays off the skin. This active and protective mineral content of both zinc and titanium is reason for the "thickness" that occurs with some products. However, technology has greatly advanced and there is now an abundance of mineral based SPF products on the market with excellent permeability.
Chemical based sunscreens, which includes anything in the "benzone" family, "protect” skin by absorbing UV rays. This topic raises much concern of chemical by-product impacts, free radical damage in the skin, as well as chemical based skin irritations, especially in children and sensitive skin types.
Always play it safe with a mineral based SPF.
